Winter Activities (Beyond the Canal)
We all love the Rideau Canal Skateway, but sometimes you want to avoid the crowds (or the ice conditions aren't cooperating).
Luckily, Ottawa transforms into a playground in the winter. From spa days to forest adventures, here are 5 ways to actually enjoy the sub-zero temperatures this season.
1. Patinage en Forêt
Lac-des-Loups (45 mins away)Imagine skating on a 3km trail that winds through a dense pine forest. Unlike the wide, open canal, this feels magical and secluded. It is protected from the wind by the trees, making it surprisingly comfortable even on colder days.
2. Nordik Spa-Nature
Chelsea, QCThe largest spa in North America is just 15 minutes from downtown. There is nothing quite like sitting in a steaming hot outdoor pool while snow falls gently around you. The contrast of the hot thermal cycle and the crisp winter air is the ultimate stress reliever.
3. Parc Omega
Montebello (1 hr away)This wildlife park is open year-round, but it is spectacular in the winter. Seeing Canadian Elk, Bison, and Wolves against the stark white snow is breathtaking. You drive your own car through the 12km safari trail, and the animals (especially the elk) will come right up to your window for carrots.
4. Kichi Sibi Winter Trail
Ottawa River ParkwayThis groomed winter trail runs right through the city along the Ottawa River. It is accessible for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and fat biking. It's a fantastic way to get active without driving out to Gatineau Park, and the trail is meticulously maintained by volunteers.
5. The Arboretum
Near Dow's LakeFor pure, nostalgic fun, grab a sled and head to the Arboretum. The hills here range from "gentle slope for toddlers" to "steep enough to scream." It’s scenic, free, and often full of families and students enjoying the snow.
